WinRarer is a ransomware that was first spotted in the wild in August 2019. It is a member of the Win32/Filecoder family of ransomware.
WinRarer is distributed through spam emails that contain a malicious attachment masquerading as an invoice, receipt, or another type of document. Once opened, this attachment will execute a macro that will download and install the ransomware onto the victim’s computer. WinRarer will then scan the victim’s computer for certain file types and encrypt them.
How much WinRarer will cost you?
It will cost you a hefty 0.5 Bitcoin (approx. USD 3500) to get your files back. This is a very high ransom, especially when compared to other file-locking viruses.
The most notable WinRarer attack was against the City of Southlake, Texas. The city ended up paying $35,000 in ransom to get their files back.
What are the WinRarer Ransomware symptoms?
Some common symptoms include:
– Your computer has been locked and you see a message demanding a ransom be paid to regain access.
– You are unable to open certain files on your computer.
– Files on your computer have been renamed and have the “.locked” extension appended to them.
– A ransom note named “README_FOR_DECRYPT.txt” has been dropped on your computer.
What can you do?
If you are infected with ransomware, we recommend that you do the following:
– Do not pay the ransom. There is no guarantee that paying the ransom will get your files back.
– Do not try to remove the virus yourself. This can lead to further damage to your computer and/or data.
– Back up your data. If you have a backup of your data, you can restore it after you remove the virus.
– Run a reputable antivirus program to remove the virus and protect your computer in the future.
The public decryption tool is not currently available for this ransomware.
WinRarer uses the AES-256 encryption algorithm, which is very difficult to break. Therefore, we recommend that you focus on restoring your data from a backup instead of trying to decrypt it.
WinRarer is a dangerous virus that can encrypt your files and demand a large ransom to get them back. So, if you are infected with this virus, we recommend that you seek professional help to remove it and recover your data.
