Dell EqualLogic Doesn’t Start After A Power Outage: How To Fix & Restore The Data

You can easily shut down your Dell EqualLogic RAID. This is a secure process that doesn’t cause data loss. Although it is not recommended that you shut down your EqualLogic frequently. Also, it does not power off the array. But, when the power fails, then you can lose your data and have multiple disks fail. If your Dell Equallogic doesn’t start after a power outage, your data is at risk.

The reason the Dell Equallogic doesn’t start after a power outage usually is due to a long time without a power supply, such as when there’s a local power fail and the RAID is working with the battery for more than 72 hours straight, it can fail as well, leading to data loss.

Another reason for this EqualLogic RAID failure is when power surges or instability in the power supply damages the disks on the RAID group.

You can protect your data from serious failures caused during power outages by applying replication.

Top Summary: Your RAID array is at risk when there’s power fails. Your disks can be damaged and the data will be lost. Pay attention to your power supply and the battery to avoid further disasters to your Dell EqualLogic after a power outage.

How to fix Dell EqualLogic that won’t boot

Here you have three solutions:

  1. Check your power supply and install a new one, if it’s the case. Then recover your disks and the data on them.
  2. Contact Dell support for personalized assistance for your EqualLogic model.
  3. Contact a data recovery service to restore your Dell EqualLogic data.

Solution 1. Replace the power supply

If your Dell EqualLogic power supply fails, you’ll have to replace it.

In this case, your first action is to locate the faulty power supply. Check for the LED lights. If the LED is not lit, make sure the cable is properly connected and if the power source is working. If the LED light-up after you change the cable or the source, then you can move to check the status of your disks.

Important: The power supply is hot-swappable. Your array can operate using a single power supply for a maximum of 5 minutes. It takes two power modules to ensure proper cooling.

To remove the power supply

To avoid any accident, wear electrostatic protection to remove and install the power model.

Step 1. Turn off the power switch on the power supply and disengage the hook-and-loop fastener from around the power cable. Then, remove the power cable.

Step 2. Hold the handle and push the orange release latch (1). Remove the module from the slot. The power supply unit is heavy, therefore, use both hands to support it.

Now, take your new power supply unit to install it immediately after the removal of the faulty one.

Step 4. Secure the power cable using the hook-and-loop fastener strap and then turn on the power switch on the power supply unit

Wait for a few seconds for the array to recognize the new power supply unit and to check if it’s working properly.

Solution 2. Contact Dell support

Most of the time Dell is the one that can help you with your array. But, they can’t restore your data.

In this case, your best shot is to keep a daily backup schedule for emergency data recovery. Then, if Dell manages to fix your EqualLogic RAID, you still can have access to all your files.

If you don’t have a backup, then your only solution is to contact a RAID data recovery service.

Solution 3. Contact data recovery service

If you manage to fix your power supply but your Dell EqualLogic RAID is not starting, or you lost all your data due to the power failure, then you need the help of a data recovery service provider.
